A Month to Remember for 2286 Squadron
October has been an unforgettable month for 2286 Squadron, filled with milestones, achievements, and plenty of fun. From enrolments and competitions to training days and community events, our cadets, staff, and civilian committee have been busy making every moment count.
On October 1st, we proudly enrolled Intake 24/02 into the Squadron, marking the successful completion of their First Class training. This important milestone officially welcomed them into the 2286 family, and their hard work and dedication throughout training were celebrated. A special congratulations goes to Cadet Alyssia Thompson, who was awarded Best in Cadre for her exceptional performance, setting the tone for an inspiring month ahead.

The Winter Warma event on October 16th saw our cadets take on the challenge of a 10km road march as part of a team effort. Completing this demanding activity earned them their bronze road marching badges, showcasing their determination and teamwork. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the shared experience of the event and embraced the sense of accomplishment that comes with pushing themselves to new limits.
Preparation for the annual Wing Training Day competition reached its peak on October 19th, as the Squadron dedicated the day to final preparations. Cadets and staff focused on ensuring uniforms were immaculate, running through final rehearsals for drill, banner, and radio events, and packing all the equipment needed for competition day. The atmosphere was one of focus and excitement, and the day ended with cadets feeling prepared and eager to take on the challenges ahead.
On October 20th, 2286 Squadron represented the Squadron at the annual Wing Training Day competition at Greenwood Academy, Birmingham. Entering as defending overall champions, we brought our all and achieved remarkable results. The Squadron triumphed in the radio and leadership competitions, placed second in drill, banner, drill IC, and uniform turnout, and secured third place in cyber. The cadets’ commitment and teamwork shone throughout the day, and their success was a reflection of their months of preparation and dedication. The celebrations continued with a post-competition party on October 22nd, featuring plenty of karaoke, dancing, and laughter, turning into an impromptu rave and providing a well-earned moment of relaxation and fun.
Later in the month, cadets had the opportunity to enhance their fieldcraft skills with a training day hosted by 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron at Bramcote Barracks on October 27th. They successfully completed the blue fieldcraft syllabus, gaining valuable practical experience while enjoying the sense of teamwork that comes from working alongside fellow cadets. It was a rewarding day that left everyone eager for more opportunities to train and develop in the field.
October 30th was a particularly exciting day as cadets participated in two highly anticipated events. The first was a flying experience at RAF Cosford, where two cadets earned their blue aviation badges after completing the required syllabus. For many, it was a first taste of flying and an incredible opportunity to put their classroom knowledge into practice. Later that day, cadets headed to Adventure World in Warwick for an adrenaline-filled go-karting session. The competition on the track was fierce, but the fun and excitement made it a highlight of the month.
Not to be outdone, the cadet NCOs led the way with a Halloween Fun Night on October 29th. This spooky-themed evening was full of mischief and merriment, featuring creative costumes, games, and activities that kept everyone entertained. The event showcased the cadets’ creativity and teamwork, ensuring that fun was had by all.
