The November Rewind

As November comes to a close, we reflect on a month filled with remembrance, achievements, and exciting strides towards the future. It’s been a time to honour the past, celebrate growth, and embrace new challenges at 2286 Squadron.

Honouring Remembrance

This November, 2286 Squadron proudly supported the Poppy Appeal, dedicating time and effort to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. On Saturday, November 2nd, cadets collected donations at Jubilee Crescent, a local community hub near the Squadron.

On Wednesday, November 4th, we provided a Remembrance Guard of Honour at the Coventry Building Society Arena, officially opening the Coventry City football match. Before the match, cadets undertook a short collection at the venue, engaging with fans to raise funds for this important cause.

Our cadets and staff collectively raised just under £1,000, an incredible achievement that reflects their dedication to supporting veterans and their families. Notably, we were the only RAF Air Cadets squadron in Coventry to participate in the Poppy Appeal this year.

The month’s remembrance activities culminated with our participation in the Remembrance Parade on Friday, November 8th, where we stood proudly in formation to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. These meaningful moments remind us of the importance of service and the values we uphold within the RAF Air Cadets.

Celebrating Promotions and Achievements

On November 15th, we celebrated the promotion of four cadets to the rank of Corporal: Cpl Kisara Peramunugamage, Cpl Zachary Van Ristell Hall, Cpl Kian Fowler, and Cpl Ameera Bawazir. Their leadership, dedication, and positive influence within the Squadron earned them this well-deserved recognition. Read more about their promotion here.

Adding to our achievements, six cadets were awarded their Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award this month. Congratulations to Sgt Cerys Ryan, Sgt Kynan French, Sgt George Foster, Cpl Cameron Brooks, Cpl Isaac Hands, and Cpl Kisara Peramunugamage! Their hard work across volunteering, physical, skills, and expedition sections highlights their determination and teamwork. Discover their story here.

Developing New Skills

November also saw cadets completing important training milestones. A select group worked towards their BTEC Level 2 in Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community, gaining valuable skills to support their personal and professional growth.

Classification studies continued across all levels: Leading cadets explored the Principles of Flight, while Senior and Master cadets completed Military Aircraft Systems and began tackling the challenging Advanced Radio and Radar syllabus.

Additionally, 21 cadets earned their St John Ambulance Young First Aider Award, gaining critical lifesaving skills, including CPR and wound management. Read more about their achievement here.

Embracing Sustainability

On November 30th, we proudly submitted our entry for the RAFAC Environmental Award. Our Squadron has embraced sustainability as a way of life, engaging cadets in creative projects that make a tangible impact. This year, cadets formed teams to focus on:

  • Energy Conservation: Reducing electricity use through initiatives like the "Polar Bear Scarf" reminders.

  • Pollinator Support: Building bee drink stations and planting native flowers to support biodiversity.

  • Birdlife Protection: Constructing bird feeders and designing sustainable habitats.

  • Recycling Expansion: Improving systems to include plastics, glass, and soft plastics with clear signage.

These projects demonstrate our commitment to the environment and highlight the innovative spirit of our cadets. Read more about our sustainability journey in our award submission blog, coming soon!

Broadening Horizons

On November 19th, we hosted the Royal Navy Engagement Team, giving cadets a hands-on experience with naval equipment and career insights. This visit inspired many to consider new possibilities and learn about the Navy’s vital role in national defense. Learn more here.

Training also continued for the upcoming Regional Leadership Competition, with cadets honing their teamwork and decision-making skills. Leadership development remains a cornerstone of our program, and we’re excited to see their progress.
