After an incredible cadet career spanning seven years, we are delighted to welcome Matthew Smith back to 2286 Squadron—this time, in uniform as an Adult Sergeant!
Matthew joined 2286 Squadron in 2017 and quickly made his mark, rising through the ranks to Cadet Warrant Officer. A true mainstay of the Squadron, he provided stability and leadership during the challenges of the Covid years and embraced everything the RAF Air Cadets had to offer.

From flying, shooting, and fieldcraft to radio, sports, and adventure training, Matthew’s journey was nothing short of remarkable. His Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition was a particular highlight, and his passion for the outdoors led him to begin his Lowland Leader qualification in 2024. He also played a vital role in the Squadron’s Wing Training Day successes, leading the team to two consecutive victories, and retired as the reigning champion of the Martin Cup for long-distance shooting.

Reflecting on his time as a cadet, Matthew says that summiting Snowdon remains his fondest memory—a testament to his love of adventure and challenge.

Now, having successfully passed his Adult Sergeant Board at Wing HQ, Matthew returns to 2286 Squadron in a new capacity, ready to mentor and inspire the next generation of cadets. His experience, leadership, and dedication will undoubtedly be a fantastic asset to the team, and we look forward to seeing him thrive in his new role.
