The journey to leadership is never easy, but for four exceptional cadets, their dedication, discipline, and drive have earned them their next step on that path. We are proud to announce the promotion of Cpl Ameera Bawazir, Cpl Kian Fowler, Cpl Kisara Peramunugamage, and Cpl Zachary Van Ristell Hall to the rank of Corporal!
Their promotions follow a rigorous process designed to develop well-rounded leaders who embody the ethos of the RAF Air Cadets.
From First Class to First-Rate Leaders
Becoming a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) on our Squadron begins long before the promotion board. Once cadets graduate from First Class training, they can choose to apply to the Review Group, where they work one-on-one with staff to set personal development goals. Initially, targets might focus on areas like Service Knowledge, Uniform, and Drill, but these evolve over time as cadets grow in experience and confidence.
Cadets on Review take responsibility for scheduling their own meetings, tracking their progress, and demonstrating their commitment to improvement. When the Squadron identifies the need for new NCOs, those on Review may apply to fill the role.
The Application and Boarding Process
This year, the application process challenged cadets to outline their suitability for the post through a detailed written application answering the question "What qualities do you think are important for a Cadet Corporal, and how would you use those qualities to lead and support a small group of cadets?". From there, suitable candidates were invited to a formal Boarding Night, where their skills, knowledge, and potential were put to the test.
The evening began with a uniform inspection to ensure each candidate met the standards expected of a Corporal. Candidates then faced a three-person interview panel where they discussed their service history, responded to challenging questions, and showcased their leadership capabilities. This included answering questions from the dreaded Mystery Round, covering topics like service knowledge, drill, and uniform standards, and delivering an elevator pitch on why they deserved the role.
A New Chapter for Our NCOs
We are immensely proud of these four cadets, who have worked tirelessly to prove their readiness to lead and inspire their peers. Their journey is a testament to the value of perseverance and the high standards we hold for our NCOs.
Please join us in congratulating Cpl Bawazir, Cpl Fowler, Cpl Peramunugamage, and Cpl Van Ristell Hall on their well-deserved success!
