Cadets from 2286 Squadron recently put their radio communication skills to the test in the virtual Blue Ham competition, an exciting national event that brings together cadets and radio enthusiasts from across the UK—and beyond!
This year’s competition introduced Channel D, an innovative alternative to traditional HF radios, allowing cadets to participate in a dynamic and engaging format. The event wasn’t just limited to UK participants—our cadets had the unique opportunity to connect with partner Squadrons overseas, exchanging messages and honing their radio proficiency on a global scale.
Throughout the competition, our cadets made contact with units from all over the UK, putting into practice the vital skills they have developed through RAFAC’s radio communications training. But the highlight of the event was undoubtedly establishing contact with a team in Canada, marking a fantastic milestone for our squadron in international engagement.
Fg Off Seymour, who oversaw the Squadron’s participation, praised the cadets' enthusiasm and teamwork: "Taking part in Blue Ham is always a fantastic opportunity, and this year was no exception. The introduction of Channel D made it even more accessible, and to see our cadets making contacts across the country and even internationally was truly inspiring. They showed outstanding communication skills, resilience, and professionalism throughout."
Events like Blue Ham provide cadets with real-world applications for their training, fostering confidence in radio operation and communication under pressure. This competition is not only a test of skill but also an opportunity to forge connections with other Squadrons and reinforce the RAF Air Cadets' commitment to innovation in communications training.
A huge well done to all cadets who took part—you’ve done the Squadron proud!
