With their sights set on pushing the boundaries of RAFAC eSports, 2286 (Coventry Arden) Squadron’s cadets took on the challenge of HADO in an unforgettable competition in Coventry.
This exciting event, held at the UK HADO headquarters in Coventry, was an invitation-only gathering for cadets who had supported the European Championships earlier this year. Three cadets from 2286 Squadron, Sergeant Kynan French, Corporal Cameron Brooks, and Corporal Kisara Peramunugamage, represented the Squadron as part of the competition. The team formed by the three cadets not only displayed incredible skill and teamwork but also secured a respectable third-place finish in the final match against the England HADO professional team.
HADO is an innovative, interactive eSport that combines augmented reality (AR) technology with physical movement, where players engage in team-based matches using headsets and wristbands to cast energy blasts and shields in real time. The unique sport has gained traction globally, offering participants the chance to test their reflexes, teamwork, and strategy in an immersive environment.
Corporal Cameron Brooks added: “It was amazing to be part of something so new and innovative. The energy in the room was incredible, and it was a fantastic opportunity to challenge myself and my teammates.”
In between their gameplay, Corporal Kisara Peramunugamage also took on the role of managing the Squadron's media coverage, capturing action shots and video footage of the day. His work ensured the Squadron’s presence at the event was well-documented for all to see.
Sergeant Kynan French shared his thoughts on the experience: “It was such an exciting and fast-paced event. I loved the competitive nature of HADO, and the challenge of playing against the UK team was definitely a highlight. It really tested our teamwork and communication.”
Looking forward, 2286 Squadron will be hosting its own HADO experience for cadets in January, providing an opportunity for those who are eager to give this innovative sport a try and further enhance their eSports skills
As the Squadron’s 2nd in Command and the Wing eSports Officer, Flying Officer Amy Seymour expressed her pride in the cadets' achievements: “I couldn’t be more impressed with how the team represented 2286 Squadron. Their dedication to improving and pushing themselves in this new form of eSport shows the forward-thinking and dynamic spirit of the Squadron. It’s a privilege to support their continued growth in this exciting area.”
